My gerbil got out of his cage and somehow broke his back. Although I want to take him to the vet, I don't have 50 dollars right now. Someone told me benadryl works to put them to sleep but I don't know. Does anyone know how to put a gerbil down at home without hurting him?

  1. I've heard that half a pill of Vicodin would do the job.

  3. I've heard that benadryl works too. Try asking a vet what do.  i'm sure they'll help. I'm sorry your gerbil broke it's back. :(  I hope everything will work out nicely.

    P.S. I hope this helps. ;)

  4. I hate to say this becuase it seems mean but rat poison would work or bleach but i dont recomend  either, a hammer or axe...it is so cruel but it looks like the fastest thing you can do and it would be virtually painless...sorry for your loss

  5. VET. IMMEDIATELY.

Find an emergency vet in your area.

If it was your brother with a broken back would you just sit and watch and wait for him to die?

If you can't afford the vet bills, take it to the vet and leave him there for possible adoption if he survives.

You need to take responsibility for your pet.

    NOW.

  6. I think you should call various vet offices and find out for sure on cost.  Let them know the situation, and that you don't have much money.  I had 3 gerbil-sized rats put to sleep, and it only cost $30 for all 3.

  7. That's sad. I don't know how to do it without hurting the poor little feller.

  8. Try calling some more vets and explaining your situation. I'm sure someone will cooperate or give you advise on how to either keep him comfortable until you can afford it or euthanize him humanely. Please don't try to kill him without consulting a vet first!

  9. Please speak to some vets and ask some more questions.  Some clinics have lower euthanasia fees depending on things like owner being present and aftercare (cremation, take body home).

Let them know that you are considering home euthanasia at this point.  Many vets will perform a euthanasia for free rather than know a pet went through that.  Of course, they don't go around advertising this and it is generally determined on a case by case basis.

I don't know of any ways to humanely perform euthanasia at home.  Please talk to a vet.

  10. Please call the vet and tell them your situation. See if they won't take you at a discount or something. Please at least try that before you attempt home euthanization. You took on this pet and should have set something aside just in case. Since you didn't, you have to work to try and find a solution. Call all the vets in your area. Please.

  11. Do not try any of these home euthanasia solutions. Freezing to death is not like going to sleep. If you attempt something and fail or your hamster suffers intense pain or distress not only will you feel terrible (and likely never lose the guilt), but this will be grossly unfair to your pet. (It may also constitute a crime as animal neglect and cruelty is at best a misdemeanor and depending on where you live, may be a felony.) Take the hamster to a vet. Most vets will work out a gradual payment plan and if you are there with the hamster, they will be hard pressed to let the poor animal suffer.

In future, if you cannot afford the vet you should not get the pet. Small animals do not cost much to obtain, but their vet bills are no smaller.

  12. if you put him in the freezer he will just fall asleep - its the most humane way, at home...  if you take him to a vet they will put him to sleep for under $10 or just drop him off and leave..
