Question:

My gerbil is lonely..?

okay so at first i had 3 gerbils

one got out and never came back

and just 2 days ago another died :"(

so my last one is all alone he grew up in a 30 gallon tank with his brothers and now i have him in a hamster cage and he seems soooo miserable and i hate to see him like that..i dont have the money or resources to get him a new friend and do the whole split cage thing...what do i do?

  1. For starters, I would put him back into the tank!

    Losing his brothers and being put into a small unfamiliar environment can be traumatic for a gerbil.

    I don't know how old he is, but it may be better to leave him on his own. Still put him back into the tank- it will be a familiar place for him. Hamster cages don't leave enough room to dig and make tunnels. Since he will make 1/3 the waste, it might not need cleaning quite as often.

    Provide him with as much cardboard to chew as you can, and give him plenty of time outside the tank with you.

    Most gerbils do fine on their own after their siblings die, it just takes getting used to.


  2. put a mirror or two in  the cage this way it looks like he/she has a friend..it worked with our bird and i hope it helps you!!
