i really like gerbils, they are really cute how can i get one of my female gerbils to have babies? one of my friends has a hamster, but i don't think they can mate. i read on the internet that they can mate with mice but the babies can end up with a bad personality. how can i do this without buying another gerbil? the reason why i cant buy another gerbil is because my mum and dad don't want to have loads of baby gerbils. i will just say "oh my god! how did that happen? oh well, its happened now they is nothing we can do about it. :(" lol they will be fine with it if it accidentally happened. wink wink ;)

  1. Get a male gerbil. Let it do it's thing. Take it back to the pet shop and say sorry but i can't take it now. Lol!

You could always try it with a male dwarf hamster, and get a hambil. =]

    Lol!

Just wait till your older lol!

  2. A girl gerbil can't have babies without a male gerbil. Sorry, your outta luck. Just enjoy the ones you have.

  3. some animals can get pregnant randomly without a male a kimodo dragon had 7 babies alone and you could use that as an excuse

You could just buy another and return it or something its not really that easy srry to not be much help:(

  4. I am floored by some of the responses here.  You should NOT trick your parents and you should not be mating your gerbil. End of story.

There are many gerbils in shelters that are in dire need of homes right now.  You breeding your gerbil will help contribute to this problem.  Gerbils can have numerous offspring. Where will you keep them? Males can live together decently enough, but females don't do well in groups more than two.  They tend to turn on one another.  Do you have enough cages to do this? How about the funds for more cages or vet visits that the babies will need?

If you got your gerbils at a pet store, do NOT breed them.  Pet stores breed to breed, they do not breed for health or temperament.  This means that even if you have two healthy parents, they can produce offspring that are unhealthy or ill tempered.  Breeders breed good solid lines of gerbils and they do it to better the species as a whole, not for fun or for profit (gerbils don't sell well at all and vet bills are quite a bit more than the gerbil is "worth").  Breeders will allow individuals to purchase their young but they make individuals sign a contract that states they will not breed the gerbils they got and contribute to the problem of the overpopulation of gerbils.  Breeders will also insist that if you cannot care for your gerbil at any point in time that you take it back to THEM.  Can you be sure you have homes for ALL the babies when they arrive? Are these homes forever homes or are these homes with your friends who might think gerbils are great now but will soon get bored of them?

It would be irresponsible of you to breed your gerbils.  It would also be a big health risk if your gerbil is older.  Your parents aren't stupid. They'll know what you did.  Gerbils don't just become pregnant on their own.  Not only would you be in trouble for lying to your parents, but you would be in charge of several little lives that are going to need money, love and homes.  Please don't contribute to the breeding of inbred, sub-par animals and to the already overwhelming population of gerbils in the world.

I know baby gerbils would be great fun for you, but please do what's in their best interest and simply... don't.

  5. Try the hamster and you could have the first (or second) herbils or gamsters

  6. Why do you want to breed? What are you trying to improve? Do you want to produce show quality gerbils? fantastic pets? great temperaments? certain colors/markings? etc. What have you done to prepare for a litter? Have you researched for at least a month? Have you spoken to experienced gerbil breeders, heard their experiences, taken their advice, and learned as much as you can BEFORE attempting to breed?

Are your gerbils from a pet store? If so, they shouldn't be bred. You don't know their history and don't know what kind of problems they may pass onto offspring. How old are your gerbils? Gerbils shouldn't be bred if they're 18 months old and older. It can cause problems for the mom. It can result in small litters, which results in less milk produced, and the litter will probably die. It's also dangerous for the mom to try and give birth. You could be risking her life.

Yes, gerbils are good pets. Yes, gerbils are cute, but that does NOT mean you need to breed. If you're not going to put forth the effort to breed responsibly and maturely, please don't. Sneaking behind your parent's backs isn't going to prove you're responsible or could even handle a litter of gerbil pups. What you want to do, in my opinion, is extremely childish. You're not just playing a game here. These are living, breathing animals. These are lives you're messing with.

So, I do NOT recommend you breed unless you have your parent's permission, you've done enough research, and you understand how big of a responsibility breeding really is, even for gerbils. If you want more gerbils, why don't you just get another same-s*x pair? There's no good reason for you to breed. I'm sorry.

  7. Don't you realize how many animals there are in the world without a home? Rodents included. Maybe you should check out the local shelter, and adopt a different species, one that can't mate. Also, you don't want to breed them, trust me. Long ago, when I was uneducated, I had hamsters who mated. Turns out they like to EAT THEIR OWN OFFSPRING!! Just think twice, or thrice, about it first okay? Maybe check out petfinder.com and realize the overpopulation problem.

  8. Maybe one of your friends can buy a gerbil (male) and for a little while, when both you and your friend's gerbils are ready to mate, then you can keep your gerbil with your friends, or you and your friend trade gerbils for a while. Make sure that your friend's gerbil looks like the gerbil you will be swapping with your friend. When they are done doing the business of the miracle of birth, swap your regular gerbils back. Make sure your really good at acting when your baby gerbils come out! Hope this helps you! Good luck!
