  1. Rats are very nice... But you have to have patience to tame them. They're very loving and can be tamed quite well, like a dog. :P

  2. all rodents will bite you.   gerbils, mice, rats  . Rabbits will too , my budgie does as well ..   its their nature and a defence , they don't really have any loving feelings for you,   A cat does to an extent as do dogs  ,  but they have higher intellects ,

  3. well a rats bite is worse than a gerbils bite there are a couple of reasons why gerbils bite

    1. if your hands are sweaty they can taste the salt

    2. they can sense fear when you handle them

    3. they have been teased by some one

    4. they are  hungry

rats are good pets to have since i had one but they do smell more than gerbils and when they bite they wont let go trust i know

  4. They bite because they are nervous of bieng handled, maybe they were not handled enough when they were younger, or maybe you are a bit rough with them because you know they will bite!

  5. id make sure you buy a baby rat, not one thats been too long at a pet shop, they get teased by on lookers if left in a shop too long, if its really young and you talk and handle it care fully you should build up its trust, good luck,

  6. My Gerbils bite too.

  7. HI, when i had gerbils they were ok until they started to breed then all the babies started biting, there not the most intelligent rodant, Rats however are very intelligent they have a bad reputation because of the plague but it wasn't the rats who caused it it was fleas that came of a cat and were carried by a rat,  my rats are lovely they love to be handled, as people have already said your better off with a baby you can bond better then, Males are probably the best for some reason they are tamer and easier to train, Hope i helped, katie.

  8. You probably traumatized the gerbils and they can't trust you.. Animals are sensitive and do not understand good intentions from us humans.

It's a shame the gerbils will probably never be friendly..

The same thing might happen to the rat if you get one. If you must get a rat, just make sure you give it time to get used to its new surroundings when you bring it home. Don't touch it or try to pick it up for the first few days. When it's been at least 3 days, slowly put your hand in the cage and allow the rat to smell you first. Then hand it a piece of food. It's all about gradually building trust with the animal, and then once it feels comfortable with your hand being near it, gently grab it with both hands.
