Question:

My gerbils have tasted freedom.....?

The other day my borther and i decided to let my gerbils out of their cage. We started with a little circle we fashioned out of different things, but then they started getting out and so we just let them run around my room. It's really fun and they don't leave any messes or get into any trouble. We've done this like 3 or 4 times now i guess. But everytime we corral them up and put them back in their cage, they start biting the bars. Is this ok? It's really sad, and i hate putting them in their cage after they've just had the run of my room. They've never tried to bite the bars until we started doing this. Can it hurt their teeth? I don't think they can actually escape.

BTW - their cage is a wire cage with with 4 levels, and they have tons of stuff to chew on in there.

  1. no it shouldn't hurt their teeth. you have to remember that rodents teeth never stop growing so they HAVE to chew on hard things to wear them down. they probably just want to come back out and play with you don't feel bad. at least they get to run and play sometimes!

  2. they should not have a wire cage any way

  3. Ignore the genius who said they shouldnt have a wire cage.

Its perfectly fine, I had a ham ham once and it did the same and lived pretty healthily

I honestly see no problem as long as the gerbils dont escape and yall (yes, I said yall) have any other animals that could barge in and kill em'.

Good luck with your babies. :]

  4. I have a gerbil that sit on the sit of the cage and chew on the bars for hours at a time (all way it the same place [smart gerbil]) it fine, be just don't take the freedom away you can just finish what you start.

You know what is fun to do put them you a shirt pocket, they stick they head out and you can walk around!
