  1. A much more likely explanation is ammonia poisoning, which is now essentially chemically burning the scales.  Another possibility is septicemia, which is an internal infection.  Either way, more frequent water changes would be a very good start, as would a proper sized tank.  If you've got a Common Goldfish, you should really be looking at a 55 gallon tank for just one!  For fancies, start at 20 gallons!


  2. Highly unlikely.  Goldfish can live to be 50 and get very large.  Your goldfish is most likely too young and too small and your tank is not the proper environment for breeding.  Many fancy goldfish change color throughout their lives.

  3. Goldfish do grow very large and can change color with age, light conditions and other reasons as well. Check your food. It may contain red dyes which could result in a color change. Most likely not pregnant.
