.. he cannot swim to the bottom of the tank, he just bobs back up very quickly. We have another goldfish in the tank, that one is fine. The tank has a proper filter and they are not over fed.

Does anyone know what the best thing to treat it is? Thanks.

  1. why dont dont u try giving the fish its own tank for a little and while u do that check if the fish has any cuts or bruies or maybey it could have an infection, take the fish to the vet they will sort it out

    ur welcome

  2. You could prod it with a pin and see what happens. If you're really worried take it to a vet that treats... er... goldfish.

  3. The best thing to do, if you suspect it is swim bladder, is to go to your local pet shop and pick up a swim bladder treatment. It will contain exactly what your fish will need to recover from swim bladder.

If it is constipated, it would be worth defrosting a pea, popping it out of the shell and breaking it up into little pieces. If the fish eats this, it will flush it through and relieve any constipation. It would be worth doing this as a precaution even if it isn't constipation, it won't harm the fish.

The buoyancy problems do suggest that it has swim bladder though.

  4. swim bladder problems and constipation are 2 things that happen commonly to gold fish.A stuffed gold fish might not swim right just cause the stomach pushes up against the swim bladder causing imbalance. Try feeding it some peas without the skin to work as  a laxative, if it is a swim bladder problem --nothing has been known to treat fish with this condition. Gold fish should be fed flake food to prevent clogging as some pellets use too much "ash" . This is the reason some goldfish food pellets cost more expensive since they do not use ash to hold together pelleted food.

on the other hand they can live for a long time with this condition until the swim bladder " catches up" with the development of the gold fish. others  end up living a complicated life....

  5. Start feeding your fish pees cut in half, Proven by a professor of fish medicine at N.C. State College of Veterinary Medicine, It'll help your fish break food down faster.

Fast your fish for a few days, With hold all food from them for 2-3 days, NO FEEDING AT ALL!

Do you have a smaller tank? If so set it up like any other tank with slightly warmer water, I'm talking less than half a degree here, move gold fish to that.

Prevention from now on: Pre-soak your flake food/pellets to avoid expansion in the fish's stomache. Or better yet switch to frozen food like brine shrimp or frozen fish cubes.
