Question:

My goldfish seems sick?

We had 6 goldfish and slowly but surely they all seem to have died. There's two left and one of them is doing that thing where it can't prevent itself from floating to the top of the tank on it's side.

It swims to the bottom and floats right back up once it stops flapping it's fins.

Is death inevitable? Is there something I can do to help prevent it?

Should i move him?

They live in a 12 gallon tank by the way and there are two snails that live in the tank with them and a live plant. We've used the bacteria stuff and the chlorine stuff also.

  1. IS probaly smthin wrong with the fish so try getting new ones and see how it goes...if the new fish dies again...u might want to recycle your tank and buy new fish in 3 days or 1 week. And see how that goes.

  2. Hmmm, I would test your water, especially because Goldfish are known to be a dirty fish (they produce A LOT of waste) so, you could try changing half of the water, Take of the water to your local aquarium to have it tested, alot of places will test it for free. Do the fish have any diseases? Thats also something I would look into, have they changed in any way? Do they have white spots?.

    Sorry and good luck

  3. First, I would seperate him from the others.

Does your fish look bloated? It could be dropsy.

Might want to get some PimaFix, MelaFix or Tetracycline.

  4. One goldfish requires a 20 gallon tank with 10 more gallons for each additional fish so that could explain your high death rate.  You need really good filtration and at least 20% water changes weekly with good gravel vacuuming to keep waste from accumulating in the gravel.

Swim bladder disorder can sometimes be treated by fasting the fish for a couple days then feeding shelled mashed cooked pea then fasting a few days again.  That will clean out their digestive system.  Resume feeding with small amounts of food that has been soaked.  Goldfish are pigs and eat too much too quickly.  They only need food in the amount of about the size of their eye twice a day.  They gulp food quickly so if food isn't soaked they will gulp it in and then it swells in their stomach causing bloating which presses on the swim bladder.

  5. 12 gallon is very small for 6 goldfish..they died in their own filth...and also gasping for air...12 gallons is small for 1 goldfish...what kind is it??common or fancy?? commons really need 60-75 gallon for 2 goldfish..they grow over 1 feet...and fancies need 20 gallons each...you can comfortably have 2 fancies in 30-40 gallon tank...they definitely will die in a small tank..goldfish need a lot of research..they often get mistreated and famous for ease of maintenance, but that is not the case...they need a lot of care and good quality water, big tanks and very strong filters..I suggest for these 2 goldies upgrade to a 40 gallon tank asap..and a very strong filter recommended for 400 gallons..you get those for like 35 bucks...and research..loads of info up on the net...
