My grandmother didn't understand how stocks worked and didn't want anything to do with it so she threw all of his receipts away. How do I find them?

  1. If you know the name of the brokerage company through which your grandfather bought his stocks.  Then you can contact them and find out if they have any stock certificates in your grandfather's name.

Even if that company has been taken over by some other company, or something else happened to it.  Somebody still will have the records and the stock certificates in your grandfather's name.  And all you have to do is track it down.

But if your grandfather was keeping the stock certificates at his home.  And your grandmother threw them away.  Then there is not much you can do to get them back.  Stock certificates are like money.  Once you loose it.  Then there is not much you can do to get it back.

  2. if you have the certificates ( not done that often today) you can look at any of the investor web sites to find the current value.  Then you will need to see what the value was 30 years ago. In 30 years many company stocks split, merged or even went out of business.

  3. Add more detail to your question by telling us what records you DO have.
