People tend to use "great uncle" and "grand uncle" interchangeably. I prefer "grand uncle" and "grand aunt" because they then parallel "grand father" and "grand mother". The siblings of your 1st great grandparents are your 1st great granduncles & aunts, the siblings of your 2nd ggp are your 2nd gga & u and so on.

If you want to get technical because he was hauled up for doing 110 in a 35 mph zone and telling the state trooper to wait while he finished his beer, you can add "by marriage", as in "uncle by marriage", "grand uncle by marriage", "great granduncle by marriage" and so on. If he is a decent old geezer except for the cigars he gets out after the annual dinner, drop the "by marriage".

No, he would not be your Great Uncle, he would be your Grand Uncle. Your grandmother's sister would be your Grand Aunt (not Great Aunt) and her husband, naturally, would be your Grand Uncle. To become a 'Great' Aunt or Uncle, you'd have to back another generation...then they would be Great Grand Aunt/Uncle. There doesn't have to be a blood line with Aunts or Uncles, because they are/were married into your family. Your ancestor's siblings are 'blood line' Aunts and Uncles...their spouses are also your Aunts and Uncles through marriage.
