  1. Probably 6080 or 6081

  2. Huh-- well I thought this would be a lot of different things, but turns out, there's really only one possibility, and that's 6090, Royal Knight's Castle from 1995.

But that's assuming that we're talking about 100% pure stuff.  Chances are good that he's gotten some other stuff mixed in with his castle, lost some pieces, or inherited the flag from another set, friend, or something similar.  Especially since this set is 13 years old!

There's only two flags that have red and white and a lion head on them:

Other flags with lions have appeared in:

    - red / blue / gold (Crusaders)

    - blue / yellow (Knight's Kingdom)

    - blue / yellow (Knight's Kindom another variant)

    - blue / gold (2nd Generation Kinght's Kingdom)

    - red / gold (Harry Potter)

    - yellow / blue (Duplo)

The two that have white are both from the Royal Knights line, which was in stores around 1995-1997.

You can get a free download of the instructions here:

And if you want a replacement copy, you'll probably have to go to BrickLink, and do a search for "6090 instructions":
