A meteorite, and it could possibly be worth money. He should call the nearest college to inquire.

You should keep it though. Science already has all that kind of c**p. Your family and friends will probably appreciate it more.

Strange your gf did not pick it up...it's a meteorite.  It's worth something.  Usually, they're are rather smooth looking.  Based on size and composition, the larger the more valuable.  Check ebay, you'll get an idea of how much they're worth.  Need to confirm with a gemologist first, though, that it is an actual meteorite.

Get yourself a decent metal detector and start hunting for it. If it just crashed recently you MAY see the impact area. Depending on it's size, it could be laying on the surface or buried several feet deep, depending on soil conditions. This is where your metal detector will come in handy. Many meteorites are composed of heavy minerals, such as lead. A meteorite of any size.....say bigger than a baseball...could fetch you anywhere from $100.-$50,000. There are numerous people who collect these. Sometimes a college or university that has a good astromony department will also purchase these. Sometimes they are sliced into two halfs to display the interiors, which can be brilliant or composed of various minerals. Yes....it could weight anywhere from 3-4 lbs or as heavy as 20-30 lbs.

A rock can be anything -- It can be a meteorite or a comet etc. It'll be impossible for a star to land on Earth. also, shooting stars aren't really stars.
