I water and take care of my grass. I have tall fescue and kentucky blue grass. Is it worth to pay a company to come out, if this happens every year around summer time? Is there something I can do that affordable to get green again in 90 to occasion 100 degrees temp?

  1. lawn is a high maintenance  obsession. The lawn service companies will occasionally put out some weed killers, but mostly they will use liquid seaweed as a soluble fertilizer. Doesn't last long, and is readily available to the lawn as they put it on as a liquid.

The real solution lies in two places.

First - is  the soil. If you do not have a minimum of 3" of organic (rich) top soil, you are going to have shallow roots. Guess what happens in droughts to shallow roots?  If you have trees, you have additional root zone competition for the water.

Second - Is the type of lawn. Fescues are the highest maintenance type of lawn to have. Warm season grasses are much more tolerant of heat and drought. And they spread which helps to repair itself. requires less fertilizing also, and minimal reseeding if any. Does turn brown in the winter. But, you can over seed with Rye if you want a green lawn all year.

  2. You my friend , have a fungus. Also heard it called brown patch. Along the same lines as powdery mildew on crape Myrtles - fungus due to high humidity / wet leaves for extended period. Too late now. prevention is key.

All fescues get it in summer. Dont let the blades stay wet so water by 10 am.

this is also assuming you did follow the instructions for how much seed to put out when and if you overseeded. Sometimes the excess seed is now dying off do to competition with the established grass.

Prevention starts around early may and granular is best. i have also minimized it by spraying 100 percent mouthwash.

Its difficult at best to fight, all fescues in the south get it.

Google and research fungus in fescue lawns for more.

Give me best answer when you get done researching.

  3. This is natural for fescue and kentucky blue grass. They become dormant in the heat of the summer. On the plus side, they will stay green in winter if you have mild weather. Fescue will grow in partial shade which not too many grasses will.

  4. Your grass is dying from the hot summer sun and lack of water.  Yeah I know you said you water it.  Do you leave the water running on it all night long or for several hours?  Don't water it during the day, I've heard that's bad for it.  Or is watering it at night bad?  Can't remember, but I do know that most who do water with sprinklers do it at night.

The only thing the company is doing is putting poison on your lawn that will make your kids and pets sick.  Chemicals will kill weeds and bugs, but won't help your lawn.  Maybe they used too much fertilizer and burned out your grass.
