It doesn't have a root system or trunk. It looks like it grows from the tips of the grass and the substance ranges from one inch spots to 12 inches. It smells like a mushroom. The sun drys the goop, then it hardens and turns dark brown. When you kick it then black/brown powder will burst from it. The goop has the consistency of yogurt or something. My yard emits about ten new spots every night. Does anyone have the same problem, or the name of this species?

  1. I believe that it is a mildew or fungus.  Most likely you are over-watering your lawn OR watering at night, which would promote mildew or fungus growth.  If you are watering at night, you should switch it to early morning (between like 4:30-6:30am).  This should help solve the problem.  Mildew or fungus will not really have any adverse effects on the lawn if the problem is remedied in a timely manner.
