  1. A "comune" is a governmental body in Italy roughly equivalent to our cities in the U.S.

I don't really know much about that area of Italy but here is a link to the official website for the city of Cavarzere:

    http://www.comune.cavarzere.ve.it/

and another site about the city: http://www.cavarzere.it/

Sorry they are both in Italian. Here is a little info in English from answer.com:

Cavarzere is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Venice in the Italian region Veneto, located about 35 km southwest of Venice. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 15,375 and an area of 140.4 km2.[1]

The municipality of Cavarzere contains the frazioni (subdivisions, mainly villages and hamlets) Rottanova, San Pietro, Valcerere-Dolfina, Villaggio Busonera, Boscochiaro, and Grignella.

Cavarzere borders the following municipalities: Adria, Agna, Anguillara Veneta, Chioggia, Cona, Loreo, Pettorazza Grimani, San Martino di Venezze.

  2. The Soviet Union was a "commune"  How well did it work out?

The word "communism" comes from the word "commune"

  3. Download "Google Earth" and find "Cavarzere"... you'll see it... better than you hope :)

  4. It exists. "Comune" pronounced "coe moo nay" is a municipality or village (not as in a 3rd world country) or better yet... a city.

My father (and grandfather) was born in Spain and it was fun & interesting tracing back... If you go to Carvarzere (stress is on the "z") you should go to the church where he was baptized and find his baptismal certificate. You'll find a treasure trove of information on it such as who his godparents were, addresses, etc...

  5. Cavarzere is still there, with the same name.

It's a rather small village of abt. 17000 inhabitans ( in the '50s years they were almost the double but people left the village for the rivers Adige and Po disastrous flood in 1951 with several hundreds of deaths). It's nowadays a Municipality (Comune) in the province of Venice and no longuer in the Venice's Comune like it was in the past.

Here's a link with pics relevant Cavarzere village.
