  1. Ask your father what her first name was?

    Just a thought.

If you are now 80, she was born roughly 170 years ago. if you are now 16, she was born 106 yeas ago, again roughly. (30 years per generation.)  If you know what decade she probably lived in, that would help.

  2. More info would be helpful, like birth date or the year.

http://www.familysearch.org found a number of "Ray Holmes" people listed.

    Some of the matches...

Feb 1888 birth in IL. - parents Charles and Anna

Sept 1891 birth in OH. - parents Henry and Harriet

Mar 1886 birth in MI. - parents James and Sarah

Feb 1914 birth in KS. - parents William and Myrtle

  3. You find her the same way you would find any ancestor, do the genealogy...

Start with yourself and work back, talk to any living relatives you can and write everything down.  Once you have a start you can go about verifying the information.

http://www.familysearch.org is a good place to start, you can gain access to records there.  If they don't have it go to your public library and see if they have a genealogy section.  Usually if they do you can access "ancestry.com" through the libraries system.  They have huge amounts of records including all the census, and birth/death records, military records etc.

While your at familysearch click on find a Family History Center and see if there is one near you.  You can go and get FREE help in getting started, they won't do the work for you, but will be very helpful in pointing you in the right direction.  They have access to ancestry.com and the LDS archives.

    Good luck
