Ok my great uncle was a soldier in 1939 in poland and fought during the invasion and as a partisan during the war,and also after the war he fought against communism and was captured in 1947 or 1948 and was sent to jail for 6 years and then died when he was in his sixties. how can i find out more about him?My grandparents told me stories of him and i want to find out more im in canada and my grandparents are in poland and im going to poland next year.

How can i fond out more about him?

  1. Contact the Polish embassy in Canada and tell them about you great uncle, and give as much details as you can, name, unit, area he fought in as a partisan. They may have information on specific partisans or their role. You may also like to research the German occupation in Poland to see what areas had active partisan operations. Now that communism in Poland is over, you may also be able to locate records of internement of anti-communists after WW2. Although you may need to read and speak Polish for that.

    When contacting the embassy find out if there are any online Polish-English (language) websites dedicated to the partisans. I am sure they would be happy to help.
