I put my guinea pig in the tub with cold water she was panting and was not walking and i had to force her to drink water, after about 40minutes in the tub we took her out and layed her on a dry towel. I haven't noticed her urinate but she has pooped 9 different times and each time she pooped it was from 4 to 16 drops. she takes little steps just 1 to 3 at a time. When I try to give her water out of her water bottle it looks like she wants to take a drink because she moves her face towards the bottle but she misses the spout. I'm not sure if she can see or not. Now this is my son's guinea pig and they are both very very very attached to each other. When she hears his voice she will start whistling or she will run towards him and l**k him. Well now it seems like she doesn't even notice he's right next to her. What do I do? I 'm a single parent and I really can't afford to take her to an animal hospital. Can someone give me some advice? Please

  1. First of all the guinea pig should not have been stuck in a tub of cold water. Since she was overheating, it would have been best to move her cage somewhere that's colder (assuming she's an inside guinea pig). There really isn't much help I can give...

  2. try giving her cold foods, it might help.

I hope she/he will be okayy.

  3. well if she ends up ok,make sure to stick about 4 bottles of water in the freezer, then the next day put one in her cage and she will lie next to it to keep cool, you'll have to switch them as they thaw (take one out of the freezer and put it in her cage and put the thawed one in the freezer),if she is cooled now I would suggest letting her rest she needs her strength..try giving her a carrot.

  4. you seem to be doing everything you can, hope it turns out ok

  5. How did you 'overheat' it? It may have brain damage if it got too hot for too long, ie. heat stroke...

  6. She needs nursing care which you can provide, not a hospital, anyway.

You really need to get some water into her, and some food too.  Maybe a dropper would make it easier.

Maybe you could hold some vegetables up to her mouth to eat, or puree the vegetables with water.  Make everything easy for her, but keep her a little bit stimulated by talking to her and petting and feeding her.

At this point you need to make sure she is at a comfortable temperature.  When you were cooling her down, you could have cooled her too much (it's not hard to do) so make sure she is warm enough now.  You did the right thing putting her into water, judging by her symptoms.  It's okay if her temperature is a little above normal, if she's breathing okay.  Guinea pigs cannot go long without food, or their digestive system shuts down and is hard to get started again.

Frankly it sounds to me like this is a very serious case and she may not make it.  Her best chance is for you to do as I suggested, keep the water and food going into her, if only a little at a time.

The fact that she's still pooping and is walking a little is encouraging.

  7. if your town has an over night animal clinic, call it. You said you can't afford to visit, but try calling. They can give advice over the phone and it is free. They may not know specifics about a guinea pig, but just ask what they would do for a small animal....like a tiny kitten or puppy the size of a guinea pig if they cannot answer any guinea pig questions

I hope it all turns out for the best, I know I had a few guinea pigs in my day....

  8. underheat it.
