I have 6 guinea pigs right now...i use bedding for all of them except 2 and they are all fine except the one who i keep in a cage by herself on my desk. she fights with all the other guinea pigs so we put her by herself and she is perfectly fine..ANYWAYS we tried changing her bedding, we tried changing the type of bedding, opening the window, closing the window, i cleaned her whole cage TWICE with super hot water (no chemicals so i know it is not that) Does she just have allergies? i have checked here and there are no allergies or anything. I also tried taking out timothy hay, and adding timothy hay and she sneezes both ways. anyone else have this problem before?

  1. well all i cam think of is that sh has allergies or with the change of everything....also is the cage near a light and is the light usually on,if so maybe it is to hot or not getting sleep.hey i am not a vetg so i am just saying what i think. If it gets any worse i would take it to a vet!!

  2. Everyones Guinea pigs sneeze at some point in time..mine sneezes sometimes (not all the time) i think they sneeze cause they get something in their noses (like a dog or even a human) I wouldn't worry to much. Put if she starts discharging then i'd worry..but sneezing is not that big of a problem!

    Good Luck with her!

  3. She needs an exotics vet asap. She most likely has a URI, or Upper Respiratory Infection. This can get serious very quickly and needs to be treated as soon as you get a diagnosis, before it becomes fatal. Sneezing is the first sign you will see.

The vet should treat her with either Baytril or Bactrim. Make sure she's given a probiotic too. My first guinea pig was treated with Baytril for his URI and he had an awful reaction to it due to not being given a probiotic, and this is common. He passed away shortly after.

On occasion guinea pigs have allergies to certain beddings. Some guinea pigs NEED to be housed on fleece & towels or else their noses are upset. More frequently URIs are the case, especially if she's always been on this bedding.

Even without discharge it can be a URI. They can go from sneezing for a few weeks and then one day 'out of the blue' it may become serious. Guinea pigs are amazing at masking symptoms.

  4. My guinea pig often sneezes a few times a day; as long as there is no discharge from his eyes or nose and he is not lethargic or anorexic, I am sure he is fine.  My little guy is, even though the sneezing scared me at first too, lol :)  Remember, they sniff things CONSTANTLY; they are bound to get some little particles up their noses.

  5. my guinea pigs do that , i asked a vet and he sed it don't sound deadly and that only a funny smell or discharge from the nose should cause major concern , he also mentioned that its just like when a human sneezes exept its a guinea pig so , dont worry .   best of luck . stephenie

  6. Allergies are rare. She likely has a URI. Even a basic vet can prescribe you an antibiotic http://www.guinealynx.info/vet.html

  7. 2 of my guinea pigs sneeze a lot and the cause for this is beyond me. The only reason i can put it down to is when you put fresh hey in i noticed lots of tiny bits flying around this is the only reason i can think of after trying everything.

Anyway they all seem happy and healthy so i don't think there is any reason to be concerned

  8. no i have not had this problem before, but i would take her to the vet, just in case.
