i have an american strat, and whenever i play the 12-15 fret on the g string it buzzes. i change the strings every month, and it has been happening since i got it 2 years ago. i talked to my friend about it and he said i needed to raise the action a tiny bit. will that solve it?

  1. Yes, raising the action is probably the thing to solve it.

Failing that working you would have to get it 'set up'. It's not expensive, the part that may help you there is adjustment of the neck tension with the truss rod that runs down the inside of the neck. (something that you definitely shouldn't try yourself unless you know exactly what you're doing).

Also, check to see if the neck is twisted, hold the guitar up at eye level and look down the neck so that all of the frets appear close to one another. You're checking to see if they are all parallel. The neck being twisted is really quite unlikely though...

Adjust the action,  see what happens.

  2. Go to Guitar Center. They will tell you what it is. You don't even have to take your guitar. Just pretend your going to go buy guitar picks and then bring it up. Tell a guitar technician or just any ol guy who works there. Guitars are so popular, you could walk up to anybody at Guitar Center and they will tell you whats wrong with your guitar and how to fix  it on the spot.

  3. yeah you need to raise the action, the buzzing is due to the string being to low to the fret and when it vibrates it vibrates against the fret
