Question:

My gums bleed and are swollen after switching to a regular toothbrush?

I used a Sonicare for about 6 months or so and liked it, but decided I'd switch back to a regular toothbrush because I've got a small bathroom now and no counter space and the plug is in a bad spot to plug in the Sonicare. Aaaaanyway, I used a regular toothbrush last night, this morning and tonight and my bums bled and are red and swollen and so tender and they hurt now. WHY?? I floss sem- regulaily (4 times a week) and use a flouride rinse about as often. The Sonicare is supposed to be good, but with how my gums feel I wonder if it was cleaning them at all! What could be happening? I wasn't brushing hard, in fact with how tender my gums were, I was pretty much gliding the brush over my gums and they still hurt like heck. With how well I take care of my teeth it couldn't possibly be gingivitis, especially since I never had this problem with the Sonicare, just my 3 brushings with the regular toothbrush. I can't see a dentist, no insurance; that's why I try to be good to my teeth. Someone help please!!

  1. maybe you have gum disease

  2. use a good handheld, floss and use a wicked mouthwash like listerine whitening cause it has bleach in it! bleach kills germs! floss everyday! will take care of gingivitis, go for a check u in case your problem is more than that

  3. Wow!  That's a pan for Sonicare!  Make sure you're using a SOFT bristled brush, no matter what.  Never use medium or hard as they damage gums.  Floss and be a little tough on the gums with the floss.  In addition to mouth wash, try a 50/50 Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse (That's 50% Water added to the over-the counter variety which is like 2%).

  4. You can buy sensitive handheld tooth brushes (non electric) that have softer bristles.

  5. Dental research points out that bleeding gums may indicate medical problems aside from gum disease.  Bad breath and bleeding gums are strong indicators of diabetes.  Swollen gums and painful jaw is a clue for a potential heart attack.  This can mean that gum disease can contribute to complicated heart conditions.  Which is why we need to give importance to good dental hygiene. Seeing your dentist can help you detect the cause of your swollen and bleeding gums.  An accurate diagnosis to detect the reason why you have swollen and bleeding gums is crucial part of choosing the appropriate course of treatment.

Fight swollen gums by brushing and flossing teeth twice a day and by visiting your dentist every six months.  The practice of good oral hygiene is a good advice that you have probably heard from your dentist ages ago.  Consider that 90 percent of adults are suffering from gum disease at some point in their lives.  That is why you should pay close attention to dentist's advice.  For this reason, it is obvious that proper dental hygiene is an important part of maintaining good dental health. Since gum disease does not discriminate by age, teaching your children proper dental hygiene will help set them up for a brighter dental health future.
