Question:

My guppy just had babies in the community tank... what should I do?!?

I asked a question earlier about one of my pregnant guppies, I kinda put her to rest, she was looking so horrible it made me cry to look at her.

I looked in my community tank and saw 4 baby guppies in my tank swimming in a plant. I'm absolutely thrilled to have them, but I never expected them to come so soon. I put a net over the filter so they are safe from that. But I can't put them in the breeding tank, because it's not cycled, and they would die just like my other guppy did.

What should I do with them? Should I leave them in the community tank? I don't want them to get eaten or harmed.

  1. To your case, take it easy. You should buy a fish-net to take the babies out.

Few hours have passed, maybe your bearing female guppy has finished giving birth to all babies. But next time, you should take it to breeding net right after you see new babies in community tank, ok.

A fish-net is very useful to take babies out of community tank. I am doing that way for the unexpected case  like that.

  2. Depending on what fish are in your community tank and how well planted it is, I would suggest getting a breeder net. These are quite cheap, Last time i brought one was a while ago but it cost me between $7 and $9 Australian. This hangs on the side of the tank, and you keep the baby's in there. Also don't forget guppy fry empty there stomachs every 20mins. You don't need to feed them this often but if you can mange once every 3 - 4 hours this will would be good. If you need any more help or have any more questions about raising guppies or guppy fry please PM

  3. why don't you put them in their own separate bowl or something

  4. put them into the breeding tank for now till tomorrow they will be ok then get a breeding net at wal- mart tomorrow set it up and hang it in the comunity tank and put the fry into it untill they grow up this is the best way to save them right now

if you can after you get them out of the main tank go get the net and get them into it if you have doubts about putting them into the breeding tank

  5. You can get a rearing cage (net covered frame) that either hangs on the side of the aquarium or has floats.  If you can't get to a store to buy one, you could put them in a plastic bag and anchor the top,  Periodically, pour out most of the water and refill it.  It is only temporary until you can get an isolation pen.  The other option is to get lots of floating plants for the babies to hide in.  That is what they do in nature.
