I have a chinese dwarf hamster and i noticed that it's stomach and fur look damp. The thing is that my hamster pees and p**p in his wheel and then sleeps in it what do you think the problem is i will be taking it to the vet for a check but i think the dampness is probably from him sleeping peeing and pooping in his wheel help!

  1. aww, well your hamster loves running on his wheel so much that he doesnt even want to stop and take a bathroom break!!!!  Just take his wheel out every 20 minutes or so as he is running so he can take a break.

    :]

  2. Ok well that probably is the case that its just wet from sleeping in fecies, but that doesnt mean its okay. You need to clean that wheel constantly to prevent infection. My hamster did the same thing and he got an infection on his eye in which i had to clean in more than 4 times a day. So do not let your hamster get infected from all the germs. I would actually put a wheel in the cage and then take the other one out so it stays healthy. Put a house in the cage too, so it can sleep in a cleaner place. I highly doubt that its wet tail but you never know. Wet tail is something that a hamster gets and its a bad case of dierreah. You would know because it'd be brown and everywhere, so I doubt its that. Im just letting you know to keep a watch out for it. So just clean the wheel or just take it out so that your hamster could have a healthier envirement.

  4. My dwarf hamster does the same thing. He pees in his wheel, the tubes of his cage, all over the bedding, and he climbs on top of his plastic hut that he's supposed to sleep in and pees all over that!! I also think that he may pee in his food!!! GROSS!!! I just take a washcloth and get it fairly damp and wipe him off gently with warm water. Then I holds him and keep him warm. The water should dry pretty quick. Also, clean out the wheel that your hamster pees in. Even if you only rinse it with hot water, it will help.

  5. Although dwarf hamsters do not usually get wet tail, this is most definitely wet tail.  Hamsters keep themselves relatively clean even if they do lay or sit in their own urine. So the wheel is not the problem.

First take away any seed food you are feeding him.  Next give him lab blocks.  Third, get a wet tail remedy from the pet store.  These aren't as strong as the antibiotics a vet could give you, but it's easy and cheap if you can't get to the vet.  Also, to prevent this from happening again, avoid feeding "wet" foods like celery, lettuce, apples and seeds.  Good treats to feed your hamster are carrots and dry oats.  This will keep the fiber he needs in his diet as well as provide a great snack.

  6. Okay. Do a test. Make sure you hamster doesn't sleep in the wheel. Make sure he sleeps in a very dry place. Make a 'makeshift' cage if you have to. Wet stomach/private can be deadly and it means he is sick. Keep an eye on him. If he wakes up dry, its just the wheel, if he is still wet, call a vet.

  7. Ok, take your furry friend to the vet this happened to me once. I had this little dwarf hamster and he would always be wet and would pee sooo much the cage would MOLD in a week :(. I never took him to the vet cause i didn't know what it was. Turns out it was a diasese  called Wetfeet i think, sadly it was to late fer my hamster and when i was in line to the vet he pasted away...

  8. well maybe you should clean out his wheel before he gets a chance to sleep in it.

  9. your hamster is geting wet from him sleeping in his wheel so what you can maybe do to stop him is try to put his fluff in a corner or get some fluff if you don't have any or buy him a den or something he can sleep in and hope that he gos in it instead hope i helped.

  10. yea im pretty sure...actually almost positive...that is the case

  11. Does he have any beddding or a house to sleep in? If not then provide him with one, hamster need a little house thingy with like paper bedding to nest in, if he doesn't have this then he's going to sleep in his wheel because he doesn;t have any where else to sleep

My advice pick him up, clean the wetness of with like a slightly damp cotton bud, don't bath him, just clena him up. Once he's clean, take his wheel out for a couple of days, and see if he is still wet, it his bottom is still constantly wet then you hamster has wet tail.

If you find he does have wet tail, then get him to a vet, do NOT use pet store remedies as they often don;t work or make matters worse, a vet is your best option! Hopefully the wet tail shoudl clear up.

Wet tail is essentially a bacterial infection caused by an inbalance in the PH of your hamster stomach. Its usually quite rare in dwarves but that doesn't mean they can't get it. If it is wet tail your hamster will get very dehydrated, very quickly, so you make sure they have lots of water and maybe syringe them some water, also you can pick up rehydration fluid from most chemists/drug stores. So it mught be worh while getting some of that, if it is wet tail.

If your still not sure take your hamster to the vet to get him checked out any way, its better to be safe than sorry.

    Good luck :)
