  1. May I ask what hamster you have? Some hamsters are just untameable especially if it's a robo. Trust me I kno. I've tried training my robos for ages with absolutely no luck.

  2. Contrary to common belief - and the way hamsters deceive us with their cute looks! - they are not sweet bundles of fluff. Syrian hamsters in particular are solitary creatures that will fight to the death if put with other hamsters. (In the wild they only meet up to mate.) Dwarf hamsters are slightly more sociable and some are very docile but you should still be very wary of sticking your fingers in the cage.

Don't forget too that they are nocturnal by nature, they like to sleep during the day. You may have woken Hammy up when he/she was having a lovely dream and since Hammy can't chuck a pillow at you or tell you to go away it resorted to the thing it knows it does very well, by taking a chunk out of you. (And by gum doesn't it hurt - and bleed!)

The best thing to do is wait until Hammy naturally wakes up (and is properly awake) in the evening and has eaten then carefully but regularly handle for short periods. You could put your hamster in a ball so it burns off some energy first. Handle gently but with confidence  - yes I know, you have to be brave!!! Also don't feed your hamster by hand. It's very easy to mistake a finger for a peanut when you're 4 inches long. It may just be that your hamster will never really be happy being handled. If that's the case you will just have to admire it from afar.

  3. wen he bites u make a "p"noise in his fae 2 r 3 times(they dnt like it so it wrks)then put him bak in his cage.take him out l8r and do the same thing if he bites.keep on doing this until he stops.trust me it wrks i did it with my guinea pig good luck!! hope i helpd!

  4. You really need to give details like how old the hamster is, how long you've had it, what you were doing when you were bitten- etc. etc.

  5. Put a treat in your hand so the hamster doesn't bite you.  You could use dried cereal but no sugar in it.

  6. I don't think that you can train a hamster properly unless you are REALLY committed and patient. And I think that they bite regardless.

  7. good luck.  It is a rodent, not the smartest mammals

  8. Talk to him through the cage, feed him treats (lettuce, fruit) through the cage a few times before picking him up...this will let him know you are nice....and he'll associate you with positive rewards.  Also, make sure your hands are clean of anything that smells like food when you do pick him up....if you smell like food, he may want to taste you! ;-)

  9. Read my guide to taming hamsters, hope it helps you. Some hamsters can be hard to tame, maybe your hamster could be one of them or he is still new to you. Have patience and I am sure you can successfully tame (not train) your hamsters.

    Guide to taming hamsters -

Taming your hamster can be a long process, don't expect your hamster to suddenly like be handled over night. It can take weeks or even months depending on the hamster. Here the the steps to handling a hamster -

STEP 1 - When you first get your hamster leave it alone for the first 2 - 3 days to let it get used to it's new cage and surroundings. If you pick him up on the first day itself, he will definitely bite you since you are a stranger to him.

STEP 2 - Once the hammy seems comfortable in his new cage, start talking to him softly and hang around his cage enough for him to get used to your voice and smell. After this time feed your hamster some treats from your hand so he get used to seeing your hand. This might take a few days to happen but be patient. If you feel that the hamster still bites you, you can use gloves initially.

PRECAUTION - always interact with the hamster only when he is active. If you touch him or disturb him when he is sleeping, he can get angry and bite viciously.

STEP 3 - Once your hamster seems confident with taking treats out of your hand you can try to start handling your hamster. Before you handle your hamster make sure you have washed your hands well. Hamsters have a strong sense of smell. If they smell something on your hand they may mistake it for food and decide to bite!

Get a cup or something similar and place it into the hamster's cage. He should come to investigate and crawl inside. Take the hamster and cup out of the cage and let him walk out onto your hand. While you do this make sure you're sat down or sat close to the floor incase your hamster decides to jump. Let him walk from hand to hand. Be careful you don't grab or wrap your hands around your hamster until he is fully tame as this may scare him and he will jump out of your hand.

STEP 4 - Once your hamster is more confident with you, you can start to pick up your hamster straight from it's cage. Just make sure your hamster is aware that you are there, if not you may suddenly scare the hamster and it may turn around and bite you.

Best way to hold hamsters is to make them climb into one hand and cupping the other hand softly over the body so that his head pokes out from the gap between your two hands. Remember, do not apply any pressure on his body, he will get scared and snap at you.
