Question:

My hamster can't close her mouth?

my teddy bear hamster's bottom is really swollen, and she can't really close her mouth. It's just hanging open, showing her bottom 2 teeth. I'm pretty sure it's not because her teeth is too long, because I had just trimmed it a few days ago.

Also, the fur on her neck is starting to fall, and she isn't as active as before. She doesn't seem to run on her wheel like before, and sleeps most of the time, even at night!

She is also terribly underweight... is there anything I could do for her without going to the vet?

Thanks in advance.

  1. You should take her to the vet. And you should give her yogurt and a BUNCH of treats everyday so she can get heavy

  2. just goto the vet..unless you want to put her out of her misery right now.

don't get her too heavy.. thats just killing her with kindness..

  3. vet

  4. You trimmed your hamster's teeth? Yourself? There was no need to do this and that's probably caused the problem with her not being able to close her mouth. It sounds like she could be in pain so please take her to the vet.

  5. How old is your hamster? If she is more than 1 year in age, it is common to have these problems as part of their growing old.

Not closing her mouth is a sure sign of overgrown teeth. Maybe the teeth were not clipped properly before. Please take her to a vet immediately for treatment, it is possible that the previous clipping might have caused some kind of infection too that is preventing the hamster from closing her mouth.

As for her other problems like fur loss, lethargy, weightloss and swollen belly, all these are due to the teeth problem. A problematic teeth prevents the hamster from eating properly causing malnutrition and all the associated problems.

Until her teeth becomes alright, feed her soft foods like bread soaked in skimmed milk, scrambled egg (plain without salt or flavour), porridge and hamster mix softened in water or milk. Also add vitamin drops (available at all pet shops) to her drinking water or on her food to help her gain energy until she gets better.

  6. There aren't really any medicines you can buy over the counter for hamsters so it is best to take her to the vet.

If she isn't drinking you may want to try and give her some water so she isn't dehydrated.

It sounds like she has a fair few symptoms so it would definitely need to be checked out by a vet, sooner rather than later so she doesn't deteriorate anymore.
