My hammy (Merlin) developed a bald patch which has now spread all over his back. Its about 4 Cm's round. The skin underneath is healthy and he is eating, drinking and behaving normally. He's about 14 months old. I wondered if maybe the hair has been rubbed away by his sleeping house. Please help cos he's my lil baby.

  1. Take him to the vet.   Sounds like the beginning stage of a tumor.

  2. Hi,

If the skin is clear with no irritation, bites or scurfs, that probably isn't caused by parasites or fungi - which are common causes of hair loss in hamsters. Yes, it can be rubbed away by the house, too. Another possiblities are self biting, lack of vitamins, or hormonal disorder.

It would be best to take you hamster to a good vet, rodent specialist if possible. I cross fingers for your hammy!
