  1. I advise you to talk to vet or someone who is an expert.  Do tons of research on the search engine, if you haven't do so.

  2. You can help the mother during pregnancy by providing lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. A Syrian pregnancy will last for 16 days in dwarfs it will last about 18-21 days. For a little while before and after birth the mother may not like being handled so she may bite you. it will be best to leave her alone of she is behaving like this unless she is showing signs of wanting to come out and be handled by you.

A few days before birth it is best to do a complete cage clean as you won't be able to do another one for about 2-3 weeks. Make sure she has lots of bedding material to build a nest. Keep the cage in a nice quiet room to avoid stressing the mother as she gives birth and looks after the pups.

Two young pups enjoying their first solid food.

If it is a dwarf that is pregnant and the father is still sharing a cage with the mother then it is a good idea to remove him before she gives birth. He can be left in though if you want to as he will help out with looking after the pups but note they can mate again within 24 hours of her giving birth and you'll end up with another litter due in 18 days.

Once the mother has give birth to the pups it's a good idea to remove the wheel from the cage as this may injure the pups if they wander around the cage. Also lower the water bottle ready for when the pups can start to drink from it. Keep providing fresh fruit and vegetables daily along with some bread soaked in milk. It is important you do not disturb or touch the pups, doing so may cause the mother to kill them. You can start to handle the pups once their eyes open which is around 2 weeks old. At this age they should wander from the nest more often and will start to eat solid food. You can also clean the cage out once the pups are at handling age.

    18 days old

At 3 weeks old they should be fully weaned and eating solid foods. They should be removed from the mother before 4 weeks old and put into single s*x groups. If you plan to keep the dwarf pups then these can be split into single s*x groups with females living with the mother and males with the father. You must make sure the cage is big enough to cage them all.

You must keep them in these groups until they are 6 weeks old if you plan to sell them. From 6 weeks you can sell them if you wish to. Syrians should be seperated by 8 weeks old to avoid fighting. If they fight before this time then you will have to do it then to avoid injures.

  3. If you don't even know that, why on earth are you breeding her?

  4. You should have thought about all of this before you went and got your hamster pregnant! If you bought a pregnant hamster, that's different. Birth usually happens on the 16th day...so your hamster is going to give birth any minute. Stay by her side and make sure she has food, water, etc. When the babies are born don't change the bedding or anything, and DO NOT touch them. The mother can eat her babies if you get your scent on them. Good luck and please leave breeding to the experienced people...or at least get a good knowledge of breeding before you do it...and know who/where you are giving the hamsters to.

  5. Congrats.! My gerbil got pregnate too once. Just let nature take its course she will know what to do. My gerbil knew and i did not have to even be there!

  6. ummm id say that you should leave it alone when its giving birth.

youre gonna want to know that its gonna eat a lot of the babies when theyre all pink still

  7. if it is Syrian then u need to know how it got pregnant. Was it the Israeli hamster who got ur Syrian hamster pregnant. Was it American? If u know the male type who got ur hamster then the cases are different. U may get an uzi or patriot looking cub!! ;P

  8. well go to youtube and search it u are able to watch a clip and get an idea

  9. let it be, let nature take its course

  10. it explodes......really

  11. Check out the following site. It gives you all the details -

A few things to ensure a happy mother and happy litter -

Make sure you give her lots of clean food and water and supplement her protein intake by giving her hard boiled egg whites and little quantities of skimmed milk. Also supplement her regular food with pieces of fresh vegetables like carrots. Throw away any stale food after a day. Try to put the cage in an area where she has the least disturbance from noises and activities.

Clean out her nest 2 days before her delivery and put in lots of fresh bedding (only aspen shavings, no pine or cedar and no scented shavings please) and also lots of unbleached / untreated toilet paper for her to make her nest. Put lots of food in the cage. After that leave the cage undisturbed for 2 weeks (except to change the food and water) after the babies are born since any disturbance can irritate the mother and cause her to hurt her babies. Remember never to touch the babies for two weeks from the day they are born.

Have you separated the father hamster? Ensure that you separate him when the female is delivering since they can mate soon after her delivery and another litter in 18 days is not at all good for the female hamster's health.

  12. The hamster will give birth on her own. DO NOT HELP THE HAMSTER, for it could hurt or even kill the baby(s). I reccoment you buy a bigger cage and more food though.

  13. Hi! Well, I had a guinea pig give birth, not a hamster, but what happened was she started moving very slowly, if at all, and she was making groaning noises. So it was easy to tell she was about to give birth. You don't have to do anything. Make sure you don't touch your hamster, because she knows what to do. Just leave her alone and she will be fine.
