Question:

My hamster is scared!?

I just got myself a hamster and bought him a nice cage. It's 2 stories, in the bottom is his water, little house and food dish, on the top is his wheel and this other food stick.

Well my hamster goes up the tube that goes to the second floor but is scared to go down the tube. Last night he went up and, I assume, he was too scared to come down because I removed the water bottle and tried to feed it to him through the top and he drank for a long while, probably because he hadn't had any at night since he was to scared to come down.

Anything I can do to get him to come down?!

  1. Give him some time and he will figure it out himself. Since he is new in the cage, he must be a bit confused now. Once he gets used to his cage, he will enjoy doing rounds in it.

You can also encourage him by giving him treats. Put two pieces of his favourite treats on the 2 nd storey and when he goes up to eat it, wait until he finishes and put two more pieces on the bottom. This way he would be encouraged to go up and down and learn to overcome his fear. Be patient with him since it might not work the first time around and you might require to do it a few times before he learns.

  2. Well, you have a hamster cage fit for a queen hamster!! He needs to adapt to his new surroundings. Stress comes from change. If someone came to your house and changes everything and you got lost you would get scared too! I would put it back as before. Pet him snd play with him and offer him a treat make him feel at home. Hope this helps!

  3. he is just scared and needs to get used to his home my hamster wouldnt go up her tube when i first got her
