My new Syrian hamster that i have had for about 4 days now has started sneezing and i think it is because of the wood chip stuff inside the cage.

The brand is peennine and it came with the cage i bought. I don't think it's the bedding because today i cleaned out the cage and removed the little house that was inside it bacause she just would'nt come out of it at all. Anyway the house had the blue type paper flakes in it and she was fine then but since she started sleeping where the wood and the bedding is she seems to have started sneezing? It's either a problem with the wood or it's a cold.

Please help i don't know what to do.

  1. My first instinct would be to change the wood chips. Many Syrians have allergies to these, or they can irritate their respiratory systems. You can buy a type of wood chip that has had the dust removed, it's just been filtered.

Secondly, I would definitely put the house back. She probably isn't coming out much because she is sleeping during the day and she is also very new and needs time to adjust. Mine spends a fair amount of time grooming and sorting her food in hers, when she uses it, that is - recently, it's been warmer and I think this is why she's moved her nest. I digress, but animals need their space and this is where they feel safe!  Maybe look at changing the bedding, too, if this doesn't sort itself.

Thirdly, where is your cage positioned? Is it away from doors and windows? Hamsters can catch colds. Also, if their body temp drops too low, they will begin hibernation, so check that it is warm enough for her.

As for the fur, is she just grooming herself or is something further irritating her. Please elaborate.

Hope this helps, if you need any more information expand your question.

  2. well if u have pine or cedar its not that great they say aspen is the best "wood chip" type of bedding and its not to expensive.carefresh is safe but its not the greatest look its newspapers compacted into hamster bedding but its definately better then wood chips aspen is my choice.carefresh would be my second.aspen isnt dusty that may be cuasing him to sneeze.(dust cuases hamsters to sneeze).dust occurs in pine and cedar so i got dust free aspen.and if that doesnt help take it to the vet it might have a cold or flu that could lead to death! good luck i hope i helped! :)

  3. the wood chip bedding is not as suitable for hamsters as people would like to think. try carefresh brand bedding, its alot better on them and the dust. hope this helps

also, she could be shaking because she has fleas.

  4. My rat has been sneezing a lot recently as well.

It might be because he is cold, try lowering the temperature of your house and putting a blanket over his cage.
