My hamster..?

Question

has a small bald spot on her side where she like, itches herself. she just started itching/chewing on that spot, and now some hair is gone. do you know what might have caused this? like, any sort of bug or whatever?

oh. and she's perfectly fine other than that.

Hamsters get bald spots due to the following reasons -

When they grow old

When they suffer from alopecia - a hormonal condition that can make the hamster go bald

When they rub their fur against sharp ends of wheels and toys

When they suffer from mites

Since she is itching herself a lot too, my suspicion is that this is probably mites or mange.

You can take her to a vet who can prescribe anti-mite sprays.If you are using an anti mite spray yourself at home, shield the head of the hamster to avoid spraying into the eyes This treatment should be repeated as directed on the anti-mite spray.

Hamsters suffering from mites should be isolated from any other hamsters or animals and be placed in a room of their own to avoid spreading mites to other animals.

Hamsters usually get mites from other animals infested by it or from their bedding. Disinfect their cage, wheel, food dish, water bottle, anything that has been in contact with your hamster and treat other pets to stop it from spreading to one pet to the next.

I'd take her to a vet for a final ruling, but mites are common in plastic cages or cages with a plastic bottom as opposed to a metal bottom with wire sides. ALthough if it's an isolated spot, it could be an injury she's picking at or the beginning of a skin rash. Get her checked out. :)

Sometimes they can get a urine burn, check the cage for any spots that she may be using as a bed and pee spot.
