My hdmi connection does not produce sound?

i have a sony hdmi home theater, i have an hdmi cable from the dvd player to the home theater and another hdmi from the home theater to the tv, but there is no sound coming from the ht speaker. i have connected audio rca cables and then the sounds works. i thought hdmi will carry audio and video. what am i doing wrong?

  1. Your receiver most likely does not have the ability to process HDMI audio. You did not provide the model so I can not verify this for sure. However, it is pretty much the case with the receiver's that come with boxed home theaters(note: Cheap). Connect a Optical or digital coax cable from your DVD player to your receiver and use that to get your digital audio. Considering you have a cheap receiver, it won't be able to process the HDMI-only hidef audio formats anyway. You won't be missing out on anything.
