I have a tv that is set to the highest brightness, and the dvd player is hooked up with hdmi cables. When I play movies it is extremely dark even with the brightness setting all the way up. When I play movies on my xbox360 which is hooked up with component cables the picture is fine. I'm hoping the problem is with the hdmi cables because that is a cheap and easy fix. Can anyone help me?

  1. Many DVD player have a setting for "enhanced blacks" or "Black on". It is usually a menu available only on component out, but maybe yours have it on HDMI as well, so check the settings of your DVD player.

Make sure it outputs in YPbPr (not RGB) and anything related to blacks is turned off.

Finally, Brightness on the TV only adjusts black levels. You need to adjust contrast to make it "Brighter".

Check also your DVD's output with component. If the picture is still dark, could be a problem with the DVD player.
