I am 12 and back when i was 11 (around december) i passed out in the shower one morning. My mom took me to the doctor immediately. They did a gazillion tests on my heart. they even did a sonogram on my chest. In the end nothing was critical, i just had a VERY high heart rate. (it was over 100. almost 120) even though they said nothing was critical they said it was very unusual for a girl my age to have a rate so high... ever since then i've been kinda worried. does anyone know how to bring you heart rate down????????

  1. When you have an event like you experienced, it is normal for your heart to race due to adrenaline being released in your blood stream.  The stress of the moment, anxiety, and such will make your heart beat faster.  If you are still concerned, try checking your own pulse at a time when you are quite relaxed in your room and not doing any activity. The normal "resting heart rate" for a child is often higher than that for an adult. The normal range for a 9 year old is 75-120 beats per min and for a 12 year old 50-90 beats per minute. If your heart rate is a little faster or slower, no need to worry because you are growing and what is normal for you is what is important.  To accurately take your pulse, place your 1st and 2nd fingers of one hand on the thumb side of your inner wrist. Do not use your thumb to take your pulse. With these two fingers lightly over the area use the second hand on a watch or clock and count exactly for one minute.  If you feel your pulse at rest is too high, wait a little while and try it again or record it for a couple days.  If this is still bothersome for you, please keep your parents informed and follow up with a doctor.

  2. When your heart is racing try to relax. Close your eyes, sing a song, read  or do whatever is appropriate at the time to help you relax. If you feel like you're going to pass out lay down or bend over so your head is lower than your heart. Doing this will help oxygenated blood get from your heart to your head and you won't pass out.  To decrease your heart rate you will need to make your heart stronger so that it takes less effort to pump your blood around your body. Take up a fun sport with some friends or dancing or something else that gives your heart a decent workout.  Eating a healthy, balanced diet is great too, especially because your young. Your body will thank you for treating it nicely in the future!!!
