Title. What just happened? Am I going to die? I'm just sitting here studying, and my heart just berserk on me. I'm fine now, but I'm afraid I have a medical condition.

  1. First off I am NOT a doctor and this is in NO way a diagnoses but it sounds like either Mitral Valve prolapse or tricuspid valve regurgitation..They both sound really bad but if everyone in america had an ultrasound of the heart 85% of them would show at least  a very mild case of either one.

To explain it as simply as possible the human heart has 4 chambers. Two on each side..In between those chambers there is a valve that separates each sides two chambers but also opens and closes to allow the blood to flow between them..On one side of the heart is the Mitral Valve and the other side is the Tricuspid valve.

The problem is the valves in these conditions don't function properly they can get stuck open causing your heart to skip a beat, making it to where it has to catch up with itself(thats at least how it was described to me by my doctor)and thats why your heart rate goes so high..If you look it up the description will be alot fancier but thats the basics..

I would definitely check with your primary care doctor and have him check you out and possibly refer you to a cardiologist in case its something else or a less than minor case of this..Generally they don't do any treatment for this though in some cases they will put a person on medication and in extreme cases can mean Valve replacement surgery... Also if you are diagnosed with either of the two you will need to be premedicated before any dental procedures with antibiotics..

One thing that you can do if this happens to you again is to hold your breath and bear down as if you were going to the bathroom(#2) and count to 10 or so...This should "reset" your heart rate an cause it to go  back to normal...

I personally have MVP(Mitral Valve Prolapse) and I am not on any medications. I have had the episodes like you are talking about numerous times thru-out the years..The thing I told you about with the holding your breath has been a life saver for me..The tests to check for this condition aren't bad either(none hurt, lol)

This could have very well been a one time unexplainable fluke..But if it happens again PLEASE get to the doctor and have it checked out..
