  1. Yes!!

Birds are not mammals, so their "mothering" is different.  They will provide warmth (plenty of space) and protection against predators (keep your cat away), but will do fine.

Before they hatch, chicks swallow the yolk which provides nourishment for 3-4 days.  But there are some things you can do.

If it were cold, you could provide a heat lamp to keep them warm. But unless you live in a northern mountain Montana, that's probably not necessary now.

You MUST provide access to fresh, clean water. Some folks very-very-very gently help the chicks by putting the beaks in the water so they can locate the pan.  There are also some nutrient solutions availble to add to the water.

I recommend that you contact your local Cooperative Extension office (or, if your high school has one, a Future Farmers of America club) for more support.

         Good luck!!

  2. Hello,

Probably all of the eggs won't hatch and the bird will even break up the shells for calcium. They eat the eggs for nourishment  also. If by chance say 6 eggs would hatch she will take care of them. The male also helps in the feeding. You have nothing to worry about. you wouldn't believe how good they are with their kids. Good luck with your new brood when they hatch. They are so much fun to watch. a lot of people would learn a lot from them.

  3. i dought they all will hatch i figure only about 5 will thats the average but if by some chance she does hatch all she should be fine but if she has troubleor you r just that worry it aint hard at all and you be able to bond with them and they will be much tamer

  4. I highly doubt that she will be able to look after so many. I suggest feeding them too when they hatch.

  5. i dont think they will all survive but u can always wait and see

  6. perhaps

  7. Budgies co-parent. This means not only the mom will feed the babies, both will.

Usually the father spends most of his day feeding mom and foraging while mom spends her time sitting on eggs and feeding babies. You will notice she won't come out of her nest to have her every 15 minute bowel movement. Instead, she will wait for hours and only leave long enough to get a drink and have a LARGE potty break.

While most of the time there is a casualty or two, it is possible for all 7 to live...this will usually only happen if the parents are being given EXCELLENT care and have access to a constant supply of fresh water and soft foods.

Often the larger babies will get more attention and the smaller ones will end up not making it. The parents will give more attention to the 3 largest (sometimes 4-5, usually not 7) or noisiest chicks inmost breeds. This gives them a chance to have a few healthy babies instead of letting the whole clutch die. It is nature's way of making sure the species survives.

If you have plenty of soft foods and fresh water available it is possible that your birds can take care of 7...if you only offer seed you probably won't see 7 baby budgies though.

Feed her sprouted seeds, fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, and you can even add macaroni and bread to her diet to help her to have enough food for all of the chicks.

A diet of seeds will make it difficult for the babies. I have added dry formula to the food dishes for my parent birds while they are feeding. If you add water to the formula it spoils quickly, but adding the dry formula to their dishes helps them to pick up the nutrients and then get a drink of water and create their own "formula" to feed their chicks.

((Remember, the mom doesn't have "milk" she eats, partially digests and then regurgitates the food into the mouth of her babies and often if the foods are difficult to digest--like seeds--the parents will pass the food back and forth from one to another before passing it on to the babies to break it down a bit for the chicks. Soft foods take less time to break down and make it possible to feed more babies at a time))
