So I have always loved hibiscus but just got my first. It is the tree kind (topiary I suppose) not the bush. I bought it from Wal-Mart, obviously not the BEST place to buy plants... anyway, they were marked half off and they all had like one branch that had brown leaves... mine has started to wilt... the leaves just wilt and then dry out (still green usually!)but not the whole tree, only a part of it. I had been afraid I was overwatering... but now i think i was underwatering... i read online i need to water until a little water comes out of the holes in the pot... it is in the 90's here right now everyday (south Alabama). I have yet to repot it but plan to soon. ANY HELP HERE??? (Just recently I have had about 5-6 leaves to start yellowing and yesterday was when I started to water it correctly, or so I think.)

  1. Hibiscus are tropical plants,so they like heat and moisture (humidity)

For this year it's best to cut the plant in half,as this reduces stress and it's need for less of the plant to recover.

You will lose this years flowers, but next years it will be very healthy. They do not like dry heat, but alabama is l believe a hot and humid place. Not too much direct sun.Water must come out of the bottom of the pot.

  2. the temps arent the problem. temps should be in the 80s and 90s. anything lower than high temps in the 80s and it wont flower.

you should water once a day. add some plant food.

also cut the dead leaves off the plant. also cut the yellow leaves.

repot very very soon. new healthy soil is good. you dont know how great the soil is so some fresh soil in a lage pot is perfect.

keep in full sun and it should flower.

also look for things like fungus or a bug infestation.

hibiscus are normally easy plants if you buy them at the right place and give it the right care

  3. I believe you have a insect or even a spider mite eating at your plant. Spray with any house plant insect spray especially one that kills spider mites. Give the plant about 5 days and you will see new growth.
