  1. See if your compressor stops running.Could be the fan has stopped and the compressor is cycling on the internal overload.Go out yonder and see if there is a problem with the fan or the compressor.Good luck.

  2. Is this a 2 story home? if its a 2 story when it works does it blow as cool upstairs as it does downstairs? It could be overloading your system. depending on the seers and age, it may just need to be cleaned(condensors, evaporator) perhaps the fins are bent. make sure the coil is level.

It could be faulty thermostat as mentioned, or just loose connection. If its ok one minute then not another then its freezing up and needs to be shut down to thaw it.

Try cleaning the condensor as a first step, many handymen specialize in this as its not a complicated process,  some even able to check the freon level.  If this doesn't change the problem then a full maintainance check by a professional would be necessary

  3. I assume you have a central AC system. If that is the case there are two key parts to the system - the first part is the external compressor with a fan. This part creates the cold air - that is piped into the central furnace area where their is a blower that circulates the air into your house. If the blower is not working you will not get any air flowing through the vents (not your case)... if the compressor, fan or piping to the blower area is not working, clogged or not told to work (thermostat or "fan only" mode)  - then you will not get cold air.

So check to make sure that when the blower is working that the fan on the outside compressor is on. If that is the case, make sure that the thermostat is set correctly (not on fan only or some other mode). If that is working - call an AC man to check the compressor or pipes.

There is an overheating sensor in the compressor unit that sometimes gets tripped - you can through the breaker off then on - that will usually rest the sensor. If the sensor is tripping - you still need somebody to look at it to determine why.

  4. Clean all filters and make sure you have good air flow.

Make sure the drains are clean and that water does not pool up inside.

If the problem continues these are likely causes

    1.  faulty thermostat

    2. low refrigerant
