My home phone has no dial tone and cannot receive or make any calls, any idea how to fix this?

yesterday, i was on the phone with my friend for about ten minutes, and everything before that was fine, then after i hung up in the afternoon, i continued my normal everyday activities, and an hour later, i was going to make a phone call, and when i picked up, there was no dial tone, but i could press the buttons and hear the usual beep sound, i can't call out or receive any calls. does anyone have any idea what's wrong and how to fix it? i'd greatly appreciate any help. thanks

Maybe your neighbors were digging their ground for some reason and they hit your phone line.  It happened to us three times when our new neighbors moved in.  Call  your phone company. The phone company should fix it no cost to you.  If anyone else has to pay it should be the neighbors for digging. Where I live the phone company runs the cable across another yard anyhow you tell them not to, but it still is illegal for anyone to dig without calling DOTTIE first.

We had the phone company over yesterday dealing with the same problem.  1st what you should do is unplug all of your phones.  Then, plug them in one at a time to see if you can get a dial tone from any of them.  If you can, then it means that one of your phones is causing the problem (which is what happened to us...our cordless was causing the problem).  If you can't then you need to contact your phone company to see about getting a repair.  It may be an outside problem that only they can fix...or, it may be a problem with one of the jacks, in which case you have the option of getting them to repair it, or someone else of your choosing.  We did have this problem once before with a different result.  It turned out that our DSL was causing the problem.  We had an additional jack line installed that was purely for our modem and it's been fine ever since.
