Question:

My honeysuckle plant is a waste of time. Why only two flowers?

It was planted last year in a large pot on the patio against a trellis. It has only produced two flowers, which lasted a week. I water it when needed, and have fed it regularly. What could I be doing wrong?

  1. No, the reason is honeysuckles detest being in a pot.Stick it in the soil and give it one more year.

  2. Too much fertilizer.  Do this only in the early spring before the flowers appear.  After the blooms are gone, cut the plant back about one third, it will recover quickly and get bushy.  Water everyday if needed.  Stick your fingers down into the soil about two or three inches to see if it is dry.  Containers need more water than the ground.

  3. maybe too much sun?  mine does just fine with partial sun in a S. California patio facing north and west, but it's not in a pot.
