  1. You could get a piece of foam rubber cut to size and fix it in there or a piece of sheepskin if you can get it.

You can also buy a vest to wear under the rug although these are usually used to prevent shoulder rubs.

I think you should also check the sizing on your rugs etc but some horses are impossible to fit properly - you may just have one of those.

  2. dunno sorry :)

  3. Buying a Lycra hood would help, but it can bring up other problems. A lot of horses don't like them, and they rip them up pretty fast. Plus, if it doesn't fit perfectly, the hood could rub the horse's eyes.

What I do in this situation is buy some thick, fuzzy material and sew it onto the withers of the blanket. The best thing would be to leave the blanket off and put salve on the sores until they clear up. If it is too cold, still put salve on, but make sure you change the fuzzy material often so it doesn't get all nasty and cause more sores.

Also, look and the front of the blanket, which covers the horse's chest. You should be able to pull it about six inches away from the horse. If you can't, the blanket is too small.

If the front droops down, the blanket needs tucks in the middle of the shoulders. Just overlap the top binding a little and make a triangle, and sew.

  4. a good idea would be to get him a better rug and see weather you need to get a smaller one or a bigger one. try out both!

  5. It sounds like the blanket is too tight, and too dirty.  a clean, soft , well fitting blanket that is removed on warmer days to allow air to circulate over the skin will help.  also make sure you curry that horse good during the winter , and dont leave the blanket on all the time.  neosporin, applyed to the sores now, and NO blanket will help the wounds heel.  you can not leave a blanket on for months at a  time.

  6. I would simply buy some undershirt for your horse... no I'm not kidding, it's a minni shirt that goes on under the blanket so the turnout blanket rubes on the undershirt and not the horse. I don't know where you live but here's a danish sit so you can see what it is:

  7. a good idea would be a small piece of sheepskin. it would be nice and soft and wouldn't rub. or maybe something similar, whatever you can find. hope this helps :)

  8. Do you mean his blankets and turnout sheets or saddle pads?  The very first thing you need to do is check your sizing.  The most likely cause is the brand or fit is wrong for your horse.  Horses come in all different shapes and not every brand will fit every horse well.  If it's saddle pads you're talking about, same thing, check the fit of the pad AND the saddle.  Good fit is a must.  Do ask your vet about the scabs!

Some horses get an infection from ill fitting blankets and pads, and it can be quite serious if not dealt with properly.  Imagine what it would feel like to have a scab and/or infection and someone rubbing it or sitting on top of it. It can be very painful. Good fitting equipment, and something to clear up the scabs are both needed.
