Over the last week or so my 15 yr old horse has been getting nose bleeds. I am currently trying to get him in shape for the 2008 rodeo season.

  1. I train standardbred racehorses. Watch for a horse who lowers his/her head about an hour or so after exercise. This is a sign that the blood has moved up from the lungs. It happens during strenuous exercise. The man below who mentioned Lasix is right, Some horses have to be injected with this coagulator a couple (3-4) hours before hard work. It prevents the bleeding. But on another topic have you tubed the horse? You may have scratched a mucus membrane in the nostril that hasn't healed properly?

  2. Agree with previous answer - call your vet they are the best people to answer this for you.

  3. Horses BLEED. a term for exactly what it is. Too much excerise for his fitness level. this is why racehorses race on lasix. Call your vet and they will give you a treatment program.

  4. Your horse is bleeding on the lungs... does him cough after you stop working him??? if he is a bleeder and if you try to compete with him and he bleeds some associations can have the horse put down on the spot... there are powders and alike you can get to help the horse stem the flow... but when they start to rupture the blood vessels through work it means they can no longer handle that much work... and it may be time for retirement.... if the blood is only a few speacks you may be able to get a vet out to help you control it... check and make sure the bleeding isnt an injury in the nasal passage... and if you cant  find anything a vet will need to come out and scope the horse for you to confirm the bleeding on the lungs... and he will advise you of the extent of damage and your course of action... if the horse is worth the money there are things you can do... sorry to be all bad news... but some times its better to be realistic then to be all hopefull and some one or something gets hurt...

  5. Call your vet.

  6. Horses get nose bleeds from the strenuous exercise like the answer above. You need to increase your horse's exercise slowly if he is out of shape. I barrel race and my horse had a random nose bleed when we came out of the gate at a rodeo. He had  never done that before but he got over within about a half hour. If your horse has them constantly call your bet but i wouldn't be that worried with it. its just like you gettin a nose bleed.
