My horse has fungus?

When I went to the barn the other day, my poor horse had hair all over his face. At first it looked like he cut himself on his face..but when i took a closer look in the cross-tie, i found that he was just bald in the middle of his face, under his star. I figured that he rubbed on something...hard, but when i asked someone, they guessed it was from fungus on his face. She said is occurs when the face isnt curried enough. She also recommended that a get a spray called ( excuse my spelling ) micro-tech spray to put on his face.

I just wanted to know more about this fungus and spray.

Thanks!

  1. I just found something like that on my horse in the same location today! My approach is I'm going to hand scrub it for a few days to get all the dead hair off them scrub it with some Betadine. Mine looks sorta like rain rot. Betadine works on rain rot, so I figure I'll give that a go. I've tried the Micro-teck on the back leg fungus they get from urine splash and it didn't work. I got some fungal stuff that we use to use on the roping steers ( it's safe for horses too) and that cleared it up. I'm sorry, I can't remember the name, but it's in a spray bottle and it is pink.

  2. ya...my horse had fungus once, only it looked like a ton of dirt, or a peeling scab..... u just have to be carefull wen u brush him cuz it can easly spred to other horses. i use a spray called Fung-Away...it seemed to work just fine.

  3. Listerine. Best cure for horse related skin fungus EVERRR.

  4. Any antibacterial soap or shampoo will work and Micro Tech also works. With all the rain this year some of my horses picked it up. Just keep your horse clean and it will clear up. Head and Shoulders shanpoo works good too.

  5. I would take your trainer's advice.

There are a couple of brands of anti-fungal spray that work well. The Micro tech works good.

Go to a farm store and look with the sprays and meds, and if you can't find it, ask.

My horse has some odd bumps under her girth that were weird surface fungus, and the spray cleared it right up!

Make sure you're careful around the face though, as to not get the spray in his eye!

  6. You know it might be sweet itch. I'm not really sure beacuse of where it is on your hrose, but my friends horse has sweet itch. Google it and there are lots of remedies.

Goodluck with finding out what it is!

  7. For this the spray sounds like the best idea, but for his face, take the sprayer out and pour some onto a cloth and wipe it on...also before applying the spray, be sure to gently scrub off the scabbies or dry skin...also if it spreads to other areas of his body, you can get some Betadine or Iodine Scrub from your vet.
