HI, i have an 18 year old appaloosa mare. I havent had much chance to ride her. But a few days ago i rode her bareback for a while. And she was doing fine. Then i put the saddle on her, and she did as well. I even got to trot with her.

But yesterday when i tried to ride her, after a little while she wouldnt move. So i took a break and went back again about an hour later, she still wouldnt move.

I rode her in the pasture because other wise she will only want to go back there. But when she was near the other horses she would just stand there. Or if she just felt like not moving. No matter what i tried i couldnt get her to walk or anything.

The only way she would move was if i got of and started getting back on her, she always starts to move when i get on her. But i dont like that so i hault everytime. But then she wont go. Im getting very frausted with her, and am at a lost.

My uncle is going to help me with her tommorrow. She will be riden just about every day, and will sometime this week go on a trail with three new horses. Im not worried about her going on the trail, i just fond out that she was a trail horse before i bought her about three years ago, and she isnt spooked by anything. Cats, bunnies, deer, birds, fireworks lol.

But any way. does any one have any tips on a way to get her to move. I do kick hard when she wont, still doesnt move, my uncle told me to slap her on the butt, lol i kind of just tapped her. Not very good with bieng me to her, yes i spoil her! lol. I dont want to use spears, but he says it will work. I did get her lounging, not trotting or anything, just walking, i think im going to buy a whip.

but anyway any advice?

  1. She sounds like she is taking advantage of you. But before getting down to discipline, make sure nothing is physically wrong with her legs or back. Also, by spears Im assuming you mean spurs. Spurs are a pretty easy way to discipline because it reinforces your leg. Is your bit to harsh? Try a lighter snaffle bit. A crop may help if she doesnt go of your leg a quick tap on the butt with the crop may reinforce your leg as well. But make sure nothing is physically wrong. Does she walk when you aren't on her? Have you cantered her? Try some lunge work to see how she moves.

  2. I have a mare who tried this last week when my step daughter was riding her, she decided she was done and wasn't going to move no matter how much she kicked/squeezed.  I had to get on her and take the end of the lead rope and smack her on the rump!  I ended up having to smack fairly hard for her to even think about moving!  This was the first time she had done this, she knew the person riding her was not experienced and could get away with it, and decided to see if it would work with me boy was she wrong.  It is important you do not let her get away with it for she will only do it more often especially if you stop riding this allows her to decide when to quit!  Be prepared for her to leap forward when you do this so make sure you hold on or have your uncle do it for the first time, to make sure she doesn't buck, you are really just startling her at first for she has learned to ignore and it will snap her back to reality.  Even after your uncle snaps her back she will still try it with you and you will have to be prepared to do the same with her and show her you are the boss.  You are not being mean to her and will not hurt her.  Make sure when you ask her to go forward that you are not pulling on the bit to confuse her and when you smack her you are also squeezing with your legs so eventually she will move off your leg only.

    Good Luck and be strong!

  3. rouse at her...... otherwise she is getting the better of you. I think that she is taking the excuse that she ,is old to far. use a crop once u got her going keep kicking, so u get the better of her. If you have an older person woth more experience let them get on.

    GOOD lUCKxoxo

  4. sounds like she's herd sour...

  5. alright so its probably just her testing you, You HAVE to show her who is boss or else she will be the one wearing teh pants in the relatiuonship and let me tell you I have found that out the hard way. if you dont make them do what you say and you let them get away with it its going to stab you in the back in teh long run and can be hard to fix. Im not saying beet the horse until she does what you want. i would slap her on the butt with the reins hard enough to get her attention. If that does work you could try a crop. I would also suggest spurs they do miracles if used right. try some spurse liek these
