Question:

My horses are allergic to fly spray!

When I use fly spray on my three horses, they break out in these nasty welts. I tried using some all-natural spray, but it didn't seem to be very effective. Does anyone know of a good alternative?

  1. honestly i don't know why people don't use fly sheets.

    they're amazing.

and even help stop the sun from bleaching out your horses coat.

    and fly masks are amazing.

my horse always has a fly sheet and fly mask on during the summer.

  2. a homemade recipe  of equal parts of Avon skin-so-soft, apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle works well.  Remember to shake before using.  It also helps give a nice coat.  I also put apple cider vinegar in with their grain and 1 cup in water trough.

  3. try putting 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in your horses grain, it acts as a natural fly repellent with added health benefits. if you look up apple cider and black tea fly repellents on google u should find some recipes. we use 2 cups of apple cider vinegar with 2 cups of black tea for  fly spray. you can also use it on black horses without it fading the color(skin so soft fly spray recipes have iol which will fry your horses hair making it turn brown)

  4. use a mask on them to keep infection out of there eyes, tea tree oil is a natural repellant and is also sensitive for your horses skin. Make sure there nostrils are clean you can actually get "eye and muzzle cleaner" which also has tea tree in it.

  5. Try Fly Masks they cover there eyes and it helps protect against dirt, otherwise theres a fly repelent called EquiSpot, its just like what you put on your dogs to repel ticks but its for horses you get about 3 tubes for $11 and theyre sold usually anywhere that you can get your fly spray, otherwise maybe you could call your local vet and ask

  6. well my horse doesn't break out to fly spray, but he does get these nasty welts on his lower belly, sometimes on his back after he gets bit by flys. My suggestion is, if your horses are having a reaction to the all natural stuff, try buying 2 other kinds, and if problems progress, call your vet.

  7. Yes i had this happen with one of ours ( the fly spray was a very strong natural one with essential oils) Since we have a horse who suffers with sweet itch we try to do the best we can - at the moment that is this stuff from Nettex and the Tea tree on from Lincoln.
