Heres my horse, a 4 year old Holsteiner mare. Her mane was to her chest, but she ripped out a chunk. It lays on both sides of her neck. I cut it/pulled it, to about 1 1/2 inch or a little more. No matter what, apply gel (haha), brush it, it goes back to being the same way as soon as she shakes or moves.

This may sound silly, but advice on that? Im wondering if her manes too thick, and I thinned it some, should I thin it more?

Im going to braid it tomorrow, since its bugging me so much, but I really could use a few ideas.

Thanks everyone.

  1. If your horses mane is thick and has coarse hair its hard to get to lay right.  I've had luck with a mane tamer, you can find them in most equine or vet catalogs.

  2. If it is extremely thick, pull it from th underside. Try banding it in the area that it flips and either use wet towel or mane tamer if you have one. Whatever you do, do not leave it in bands or braids over about 2-3 days, you don't want to risk ot breaking all of the hair.

  3. it shall grow back

  4. The side her mane lay on as a baby is the correct side it should be on.

I agree with the braid, and changing every couple of days.

The mane as a baby was still to thick, try for about half that amount of mane. Best of luck. What a beautiful looking horse, she is huge!

  5. her mane looks very thick. what ever you do DON'T CUT IT!!! cutting her mane will only make it thicker and it will take forever to be able to get it thin again. i would stick to pulling it. i wouldn't use a thinning blade because this just cuts the hair. your best bet for training the hair to stay on one side is to braid the hair when it is wet and leave it in for weeks. re do the braids when they start to come out but otherwise you pretty much have the idea

  6. You can get her mane wet than hang a wet towel over her neck... Let it sit there but take it off every once in a while so it doesn't get too heavy. You can also get a slinkie and put it on her.. Make sure her mane is how you want it when you put a slinkie on

  7. maybe could u  get a better pic of her mane? but id say just braid it so that it will train itself to stay on that side or u could wait for it to grow out

  8. All you have to do it band it, or if it's really stubborn braid it, so that it stays on the side you want.  Change the bands/braids every few days.  It doesn't take very long for the mane to be re-trained like that.  Plus it's more comfortable for a horse than wearing a mane tamer all the time.  Good luck!

    Nice horse, by the way!

  9. Put a horse slinky (sp) on in the direction you want the mane to lay
