Question:

My horses mane will not grow at all?

My quarter horses mane will not grow, it is thin and short. She is not old, so it isnt because of her age, and she is in great health. Her old owner pulled it, could it just never have grown back? Is there any way to help it grow?

  1. Please do not braid a short, brittle mane!!  This will cause breaking and you will loose valuable length and weekly washing will strip valuable oils from your horse, you should NEVER wash a horse more than once a month if you can help it.  Try instead to use a product called MTG, you should be able to find it in a catalog or at your local tack shop,  this product really does work wonders when applied to the base of the mane and tail it can offer needed moisture to the hair and encourage growth.  The other product I would recommend is Biotin TM...this is a natural supplement added to her feed that provides nutrients and minerals and one of it's purposes is to stregthen keratin, which will improve not only her coat, but her mane, tail and hooves.  Pulling a mane will not discourage growth, just the opposite in fact, but some horses just have thin, wispy, brittle manes such as appaloosas and some quarter horses, you can only improve on what your horse has to a certain extent, but you can improve it, talk to your vet about a supplement he might recommend as well.

  2. give her a butch / looks good and when it grows out it will be longer

  3. Unless there is something in the horse's genetics and heredity preventing growth I would try braiding to aid growth and prevent breaking.

  4. Go to your local tack shop and ask for M.T.G its main and tail groom you just add it to their main or tail and yeah it smells and it's oily but you should wash the tail every few weeks or so just so that its not matted and gross. Trust me this stuff works great my horses tail looks ten times better and it's grown too.

    Good luck(:

  5. well one of my quarter horses who I have had now for about 4 months had the same mane as yours when I first got him. But I used mane and tale shampoo and conditioner every week just to see what would happened and it surprisingly made his hair thicker and grow a bit longer each week. Now I use it for my own hair and its great. You can get mane and tale shampoo and conditioner at the feed store or wal-mart its actually cheaper at wal-mart.

  6. When i pull a mane i make it short but it always grows back. It might have been pulled to short and wont grow back. Theres this conditioner thats pink and by healthy horse i think and its sold in dover saddlery. it works wonders so you might wanna give it a try
