It's possible that the plumbers routed the pipes supplying the shower in the ceiling.  Guessing that you have galvanized piping, which was common then, a fitting may have rusted through.  Unfortunately, there is no quick fix.  You will need to open the ceiling, unless it's accessible from above.  They will need to repair or replace the pipes, then repair the ceiling.  Good luck.
