My house is on a private well, can i put bug killer on the lawn?

I live in central florida, and my house has it's on private well, no city water in my part of town, and i have horrible fire ants, can i put bug killer down, will it seep into our well and contaminate our water???

  1. Unless you are talking about HUNDREDS of gallons or pounds of dry poison don't worry about it.  A couple bags of ant killer will never make it into your well.


  2. you have a great County  Co-operative Extension office ... call them... ask.... know how deep your well is, too... tell them what ant killer you're using.... they will have the info you need.... since your watertable in most parts of FLA is very shallow, I'm going to say don't.... but there's folks who live near YOU who will know for sure......

  3. The ants are there because ants are drawn to water. any type ant, carpenter, fire ants, red ants, black ants, all are drawn to water--especially after a long period of no rain and then a lot of rain. You can wait it out or a small amount of ant killer is fine. Just find their nest (you can see the raised hole in the ground) and place it right in there. However ants are clever and they do move. Just keep on top of this and eventually time, weather and persistence on your part will work.
