Question:

My house is really boring?

I have all white walls, and there's hardly anything hung on them. The den has a TV, pice rack, and table covered with stuff. It has a dark wood floor and fun couches, except there are nothing on the boring white walls! No one has any intrest in decorating or making it look less like a box and I have no idea how to do it either...any suggestions? How can I make it look like a warm, inviting place and not sterile, and how can I convince others that its important to do this? Thanks :)

  1. I personally believe in minimilism with knick knacks and stuff. You can have boring furniture and everything, but painting the walls a fun color always liven it up. I have plain furniture but I did funky wall colors and it automatically gives your house personality. Go with colors you love so the house shows your personality!

  2. Choose a hobby or special interest and stick to that one theme in one room.  I like one or two large pieces and a few smaller one with the same theme.  I love the ocean so most of my house is done with pictures of sailing ships of all kinds, large bowls of shells for people to pick through, pictures of shells, African women on the beach, light houses, that sort of thing.  I also love African mask and musical instruments so my bedroom is done with lots of masks and pictures of wild animals found in Africa.  The curtains, bedspread, table covers etc are fake fur materials and bright prints.    The walls of my house are all painted different colors in each room.  Your get the idea.  Just stick with one theme in each room.  You will do great.  Keep it inexpensive so you can try different things.

  3. The first thing you want to do, obviously, is paint.

The way to start, is decide what basic color you want to go with (blue, green, yellow, etc). Then, go to Lowe's or Home Depot (for example), and look at paint chips in the color range of your choice. You'll be amazed how many shades there are of any one color!

Your final choice should take into consideration the colors in your furnishings, your personal taste, and what you hope to accomplish in the room.  You say you have "fun" couches, and I'm thinking that translates into bright colors. You don't want to put a really bright shade on your walls...not if your goal is to "make it look like a warm, inviting place".

Choose one color from your couches and then go with a much lighter shade of the same shade of that color. It doesn't have to be pastel, but try to tone it down.  Walls are a big part of what you see when you enter a room...you want warmth, not OMG! Or go with a neutral, that way you can change your furnishings if you want to, without worrying that the new things won't look right with the color on the walls.

I know it sounds confusing, but once you see the paint chips, it'll start to make sense.

Once the walls have some color on them a few well placed pieces of art, a shelf for objects that deserve to be displayed, perhaps a plant here and there, and things will feel much more inviting. And as your tastes change, re-painting the walls is no big deal...it's like getting your hair cut and deciding, after it's done, you don't like it after all. Your hair will grow back, and walls can be repainted.

Good luck, and I commend you for caring about your surroundings, and not wanting to live in a "boring white box", even though your roommates  don't care.

  4. Try going to garage sales to find cheaper pictures to hang on the walls.  Also, try to co-ordinate your decor with your white walls to make it look like you want them to be white.

  5. it is not important to do this, at least not essential important,,,  you as thousands of millions could live in the street,or outside,(which is what i am contemplating doing, living outside)

But here is an idea, get some of those big blankets, with picturs on them, like of horses, or peacocks or lions, or whatever and hang those blankets on one or some of your walls. You can also get a few shelves, here and there nic nac shelves, stick a few lights like a black light on one of the shelves, or some lava lights, or a few mobiles,     get a big screen television, a few big stuffed chairs, if you have the means and it is practical for the place get a nice fish tank,

Get some nice plants, on little tables put them around the room or just on the floor

get alot of pictures of different sizes, in frames, photos, paintings drawings, pages from magazines,  make a collage' cover a wall with pictures or objects of different kinds,     so that is it, i go for the blankets, have to go get some myself,  but i am going to opt for outside living, i like it. it beats this crummy two room apt.    so have a ball, oh, get flowers daily if you can, (and maybe your family or whoever is there likes the sterile look)     get some small sculptures, small statues to put around various places,  ok, got to go, have a good house,
