  1. Yes... yes you should be.  Here's what you need to do immeditaely.  Build a giant plastic bubble around your home, protecting it from lightning.  The lightning will bounce off of the plastic bubble, and deflect on to another, less fortunate, smaller house.

  2. No, you are probably quite safe. You probably have the roof earthed. But if you are not sure then uplug your tv antenna from the wall socket during lightening episodes.

Ask the owner of the building if he has a lightening rod installed on the roof. Likely if you are in a built up area the lightening will find something else more attractive such as a pylon to strike.

Since your home has been in existance for probably several years is testiment that it is fine.

  3. Almost nothing can offer 100% protection from lightning strikes or damage - but it can be reduced 95% or more with simple precautions and relatively inexpensive installation methods.

When installing a lightning rod on a building as a lightning protection measure, it is imperative that the rod be elevated above the building and connected by a low resistance wire to the ground.

  4. Yes. You should get a lightning conductor fitted to your chimney.

  5. No. You should worry as much as the next house.

  6. I would be more worried of someone robbing it.

  7. No.

It would most likely strike a telephone pole before a house.

  8. Nice answer Aidan lol.

My house is elevated above the street quite a bit compared to the other houses on the other side of the street. And there are house even higher above street level than mine. It was built around 1985-1990 and it's still here. I wouldn't worry about it.
